Classes
Lessons and practices are held in the Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC) Rooms 2 & 3. They are open to all dues-paying club members after the first two weeks of trial lessons. Membership dues ($90) are paid during the third week of lessons each semester. There is also the option of participating in Rent-a-Dancer to receive a reimbursement of membership dues.
Students may enroll in any and all of the level-appropriate classes offered to them. We encourage everyone to attend practice each week.

Beginner American Lessons
When: Wednesday @ 10 pm (Smooth)
Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructor: Lee Santos
Dances Covered: Foxtrot, Tango
Beginner American lessons are intended for those with no previous ballroom dance experience or those who would like to brush up after a period of inactivity. Completing this semester course will teach you to dance four common and popular American-style dances so that you can “survive” an evening of social dancing at balls, weddings, and other formal events. Basic concepts such as the dance hold, leading, and following will be covered.
Beginner Standard and Latin
When: Thursday @ 9:15pm (Standard) and 10:00pm (Latin)
Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructors: Lee Santos
Dances Covered: Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, Amer. Waltz; and Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba
These classes are intended for those who would like to become a more competent dancer. These classes are also for beginners; no previous experience is necessary. International Latin and Standard dances will be taught as a routine that will enable you to comfortably move around a dance floor. Proper technique, footwork, timing will be emphasized. You do not have to take the Social class to enroll in this class. You can also just take the Standard section without having to take the Latin section, and vice versa.
Silver Standard/Latin
When: Wednesday @ 8:30pm (Standard/Latin) and Thursday @ 9:30pm (Smooth/Rhythm)
Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructor: Lee Santos
Dances Covered: Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Quickstep; and Samba, Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive
This class is for students who have taken the Bronze class for at least two semesters, or have had comparable experience. The class will add silver syllabus steps to the bronze level dances and will emphasize technique and styling. This course is highly recommended for returning dancers who would like to continue and excel in competition. This class is not intended for beginners, although anyone is welcome to observe.
Formation Team
Time: Thursday @ 10pm (Lessons) and Tuesday @10:30pm (Mandatory Practice)
Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructor: Lee Santos
We will have several routines this semester. A formation team is comprised of 4-8 couples who perform a choreographed routine. You must be enrolled in regular lessons to join the formation team. UVa’s Formation Teams have competed at the National Collegiate Dancesport Championships and Triangle Invitational and performed at several USA Dances, as well as our own club showcases. Anyone who expresses interest (even if they have never danced before!) is welcome to join the Formation Teams; however, most members do not begin performing until their second semester on the team. The Formation teams provide a great team-building atmosphere and are an excellent way to improve your dancing and get to know other club members. If you have any questions about joining, please speak to Jennifer, one of the captains.
Technique and General Practice
When: Monday 9:30-11pm (Beginner Review led by Duc, Sunny and Rosy) and 11-11:45pm (Beginner Technique with Kevin), AFC rooms 2&3
Tuesday 8:45-9:30pm (Open Practice), 9:30-10:15pm (Standard Technique), 10:15-11pm (Latin Workshop) and 11-11:45pm (Latin Technique), AFC rooms 2&3
Sunday 1-5pm (Open Practice), Slaughter MP Room 1
In addition to general reviews and practices, advanced club members will teach additional techniques and give advice, supplementing Wednesday and Thursday lessons. Dancers are also encouraged to seek their own practice space (you can view availabilities on the SOURCE). Many of the Multipurpose rooms in Slaughter and the AFC are not reserved during the afternoons and evenings, and dancers can use them for individual or couple practices. The Newcomb Ballroom is often open during the day and some evenings as well.
