The Ballroom Dance Club is a University of Virginia club sport and social dancing group founded in 2001 by Melissa Kahn. It is currently run by President Lance Shaffer and Vice President Miranda Mobley, as well as the rest of the 2024 officer board.
Since its inception, the club has consisted of hundreds of UVA students. It serves both to promote social ballroom dancing on Grounds as well as to provide a means for university students to take part in ballroom competitions. Many club members attend yearly competitions at schools such as the University of Maryland, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, and MIT. The club also attends USA Dance competitions such as the Ohio Star Ball and the Mid-Atlantic Championships. The club promotes ballroom in the Charlottesville area by holding social dances, attending USA Dances, and hosting other dancing events. The club also puts on a semesterly showcase to allow members to perform to the University community.
Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency 2019-2020 AGREEMENT FOR A CONTRACTED INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATION of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions.
